A sculpture of Fontana "repaired" by the aerospace engineers
Where? in PCT Painting of course
That’s how a six million euros sculpture of Fontana was restored. Sooner or later, wrinkles come to everybody. The same for the last century contemporary art. The «Spatial Concept» by Lucio Fontana, a unique masterpiece, a rare sculpture in the artist's production of famous canvases "a quick paint job” was not enough. The lifting to save the sculpture from rust has been a real challenge of engineering materials. Art historians or restorers tout court weren't enough. For this conceptual masterpiece, which since 1965 was part of the Gam collections, it took two engineers of the Polytechnic Faculty, plus many months of work employing a team of aerospace technicians. Who knows if Fontana would have imagined that on his sculpture, made to stand on the grass, planners of the skies would have troubled to preserve a miliary stone of art history.
