Cleaning and quencing oxides removal on steel parts

Oxides can be removed from surfaces that have undergone salt bath quenching processes with corundum (aluminum oxide) or glass microballs.
These two grit types are ideal as they ensure a fast and cost-effective cleaning process. The choice of one or the other will depend on the functional characteristics of the part to be treated.
Corundum has a very fast cleaning speed, it is a very hard material (with a hardness of 9 on the Mosh scale) and it is highly abrasive. Choosing the wrong grit size (in technical terms “granulometry") may lead however to an excessive erosion of the treated surface (if the grit size is too big) or to an extremely slow process (if the grit is too fine).
The use of glass microballs is recommended to avoid excessive erosion of the surface and to obtain a brighter and aesthetically more pleasing result. Compared to the corundum, it has a slower process and crushes more easily. In this case, the choice of the correct grit type is affected by processing times. For both grit types we recommend the use of a 100-200 micron grit size.
