Controlled material removal
Abrasive grit can be used in combination with special machines to restore the functionality of mechanical parts such as gears, grooved shafts and profiles characterized by complex geometries whose size was affected by thermal treatments and manufacturing or design defects. Aluminum oxide – corundum, a material with a high abrasive power, can be used to treat these parts and restore their original shape. This kind of treatment can be used to remove material from ceramic, glass, plastic and stone surfaces, in order to create artistic bas- relief using special masking systems. These applications require particularly high air flow and operating pressure, and therefore are best performed with sandblasting machine working under pressure, rather than under vacuum conditions. As far as tools are concerned, a controller material removal treatment can be used to finish a sharp profile: "honing".
